Good Friday from a Physician's Perspective

"What did the body of Jesus of Nazareth actually endure during those hours of torture?"

Artist drawing of Jesus' crucifixionLike many of us who have grown up in a Christian home, Dr. C. Truman Davis realized one day that he had taken much of what Jesus underwent for us on the cross for granted.

After reading The Day Christ Died, a book by Jim Bishop, Dr. Davis noticed he'd become somewhat desensitized to the reality of Jesus' crucifixion experience by his familiarity with the Gospel story.

Says Davis, in a recent CBN article, "I have no competence to discuss the infinite psychic and spiritual suffering of the Incarnate God atoning for the sins of fallen man. But it seemed to me that as a physician I might pursue the physiological and anatomical aspects of our Lord's passion in some detail. What did the body of Jesus of Nazareth actually endure during those hours of torture?"

It was that question that led to Davis' study; first on the overall practice of crucifixion and all that entails, and then to what our Lord Jesus must have endured in His last pre-resurrection hours.

Since Davis is a physician, the depiction of how Jesus suffered is quite graphic in this article, compelling a warning to younger readers.

However, for those of us whose heart and walk with the Lord may have waxed a bit dull of late, opening our minds to the immensity of what Jesus bore to bring us to God could prove the perfect remedy.
